Beginner's Guide to Your First 5K
From couch to finish line — your complete first-5K guide.
How long does it take to train?
Most beginners can prepare for a 5K in 6–8 weeks with a walk-run program. Aim for 3 sessions per week, gradually increasing running intervals until you can cover 5K comfortably.
What to expect on race day
Arrive 30–45 minutes early. Pin your bib, warm up with a light jog, and start at the back if you're nervous about pace. Most 5Ks have water stations and a festive atmosphere — enjoy it!
Find your first 5K
Look for charity fun runs or park runs in your area — they're welcoming to beginners. Search Runtra by city, save your pick, and set a reminder so you're ready when registration opens.
