About this run
The 11th Annual Run the Chessie offers a spectacular rail trail experience along America's most scenic routes. The Chessie Nature Trail, twice voted among the nation's top three recreational trails, winds through the southern Shenandoah Valley. This trail parallels the Maury River, connecting historic Lexington with Buena Vista. Runners will traverse a smooth, flat course composed of gravel and grass, following the path of the former Chesapeake and Ohio rail line and the historic James and Kanawha Canal towpath.
You'll experience a unique 26.2-mile journey without road crossings, curbs, or pavement. The course offers an ever-changing landscape, from the wild Maury River to farmland and vibrant fall foliage. You may spot local wildlife, including deer, turkeys, river otters, and even bald eagles. The trail passes ancient stone locks and dams, and you can enjoy the cool air near small caves at the base of limestone cliffs and through a serene bamboo forest.
This event is sanctioned by USATF, with all four race courses certified. The Marathon is a Boston Qualifier. Dedicated volunteers ensure a supportive and memorable experience for all participants. Walkers are welcome in the 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon.
