About this run
The 11th Annual Run The Chessie offers a scenic race experience on America's most spectacular rail trail. The Chessie Nature Trail, twice voted among the nation's top three recreational trails, runs along the Maury River in the southern Shenandoah Valley. This smooth, flat course follows the former Chesapeake and Ohio rail line and parts of the James and Kanawha Canal towpath, providing a road-free, curb-free, and concrete-free running surface. Runners will experience a landscape of changing scenery, including farmland, leafy canopies at their peak fall color, and historic ruins of stone locks and dams. Wildlife such as deer, wild turkeys, river otters, and even bald eagles may be spotted along the route. The trail also features small caves and a bamboo forest, offering a serene environment.
The event is sanctioned by USATF, with all race courses certified. The Marathon is a Boston Qualifier. Participants can enjoy the beauty of the Maury River, towering limestone cliffs, and the tranquility of the natural surroundings. The event is supported by dedicated volunteers committed to providing a memorable running experience.
