About this run

The 11th Annual Run The Chessie offers a unique race experience on America's most spectacular rail trail. Voted one of the nation's top three recreational trails, the Chessie Nature Trail runs along the scenic Maury River, connecting historic Lexington, Virginia, with Buena Vista. The course is known for its smooth, flat, and fast terrain, consisting of gravel and grass along the former Chesapeake and Ohio rail line and parts of the James and Kanawha Canal towpath.

Runners will enjoy a course free from road crossings, curbs, concrete, and asphalt. The route winds through a dynamic landscape featuring farmland, leafy canopies at their peak fall color, and remnants of old stone locks and dams. Participants may spot local wildlife such as deer, wild turkeys, river otters, and even bald eagles. The trail also passes small caves at the base of limestone cliffs and a serene bamboo forest.

A dedicated team of volunteers ensures a memorable event, providing support and cheers throughout the race. The event is sanctioned by USATF, and all race courses are certified. The Marathon is also a Boston Qualifier. Various distances are available, including a Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, and a 26.2 Relay.
