About this run
Annie Curtis is named after Anne! The Annie Curtis Half & 5K celebrates the rich history, waterfront beauty, and community spirit of this special coastal town. Held during Founders Day weekend, this race honors the woman whose name has been part of Anacortes since its earliest days while bringing the community together to celebrate its past, present, and future. In 1876, railroad surveyor Amos Bowman set out to build a home on Fidalgo Island. When the town’s post office opened in 1879, it took the maiden name of his wife, Anne “Annie” Bonfield Curtis Bowman — “slightly corrupted in the interest of euphony.” Annie had married Amos in California in 1871 before making the journey north with him. The town that grew around that post office has carried her name ever since, and Annie is laid to rest at Grand View Cemetery right here in Anacortes. Featuring a half marathon, 5K, and Kids Run through historic downtown Anacortes and along its beautiful waterfront, this race brings runners of all ages and paces together to celebrate the people, places, and stories that shaped this community. With local businesses, community supporters, and enthusiastic volunteers cheering runners on and welcoming them across the finish line, the Annie Curtis Half & 5K is a celebration of everything that makes Anacortes special. You can count on the Orca Running experience you know and love: chip timing, a clearly marked course, aid stations staffed by encouraging volunteers, and a finish line worth running for. After your race, stick around to explore Anacortes’ charming downtown, enjoy the waterfront, and celebrate alongside your fellow runners and neighbors. Every mile gives back. Proceeds from the Annie Curtis Half & 5K support the Anacortes Family Center, helping strengthen the local community we’re proud to celebrate.
